I had a very wholesome childhood (something I have no doubt I will cover in greater detail in the days to come--you’ve been warned!). We got rid of our television when I was in the 2nd grade; my parents only listened to the Christian radio station; family movie nights rarely included films that were less than 20 years old. And the primary means of entertainment in our myriad of family road trips was Adventures in Odyssey, a family radio drama that taught history, morals, and values, primarily through the grandfatherly figure of John Whittaker.
The temptation arises now to allow my thoughts and opinions about the show to hijack this blog post, but I’m going to resist the urge, and instead explain why I mentioned it in the first place. In one episode of the show (I cannot, for the life of me, remember which one), the socially awkward resident genius Eugene Meltzner is planning how to give a gift to a young woman in whom he is interested. When asked what he would say, he responds with something along the lines of, “I’ll hand it to her and say, ‘this is a gift.’” That phrase stuck with my family, and we quote it regularly to each other when giving things to one another. “This is a gift.” It’s simple and to the point.
And while this particular posting (okay...I’m new to this...is the proper term “post”? “Entry”? “Composition of cranial defecation”? Help me out here, please!) is longer than simply “This is a blog,” that does sum it up pretty well. It’s a quick introduction to what you will likely find here. I make no promises as to the frequency with which I will post new material, though I hope the thing doesn’t totally flounder here in obscurity and neglect after a handful of entries. The topics found here will vary. I’ll probably talk about my experiences and opinions as a fledgling writer. I’ll probably talk about parenting a child with autism. I will probably provide some thoughts about books, music, movies, shows, and other pop culture items from time to time. And who knows what else.
Regardless, this is a blog. Welcome aboard.
